Go Erin: Eat
Food for Thought
I’m the first to admit, I’m no foodie. I used to say I ate “like an astronaut,” since if I couldn’t tear open the package with my teeth, I couldn’t be bothered. Which meant I ate gourmet food like ramen, Power Bars, microwave popcorn, Pirate’s Food. Frankly, I’m surprised I’ve survived.
I also went through a period where I only ate things with my hands — I was way too BUSY to bother with utensils. This was a particularly disturbing period of my life where I was only sleeping like 4 hours a night for years on end.

In fact, I realized I was on the brink of insanity when one afternoon I was standing at my kitchen counter (no time to sit!) and I thought: “If only I could chew faster, I’d get so much more done.” Luckily, I stopped this line of thinking just shy of an intervention. I heard my own cry for help.
Nowadays, I’ll eat whatever’s put in front of me, sort of like a dog. Just eat till it’s gone, regardless of taste or taint, which is why I’ve succumbed to some pretty nasty episodes of food poisoning over the years.

Best Meal: Runner-Ups
- Belize: Homemade cinnamon rolls and fresh morning coffee on the beach of Ambergris Caye, right in front of where we were staying at Ruby’s.
- Siberia: Who da thunk? Homegrown food, covered with fresh dill and homemade sour cream, enjoyed at a B&B on the shores of Lake Baikal.
- Saigon: Vietnamese sandwiches sold on the side of the road. (Warning: you may have to pick out the gnats that got mixed in the bread batter, but worth it).
- Indonesia: A big plate of nasi goren hits the spot!
- Hong Kong: Indian food was the most affordable – although I’ve often regretted the lunch-time Indian buffet: All you can eat spicy, cheap food. At least it was good going down.
- Greece: Beef-steak tomatoes served by beef-steak men. Yum!
