Going…Going…Gület!

July 19, 2009 – Fethiye, Turkey

A gület is a wooden yacht and that’s where I’m gonna be for the next couple of days.

This boat is a beauty!

We arrived in the coastal town of Fethiye this afternoon after touring an ancient amphitheater (Hellenistic period, 1st century BC) within walking distance of our cute little Kaş hotel.  We had the place mostly to ourselves, except for an ancient guide (possibly also from the Hellenistic period) who climbed the stairs faster than we did and showed us to the tombs ‘round back.

This little lady was spry!

Seating 4,000, the amphitheater was in remarkably good shape after being rebuilt during the 2nd century BC. I decided to perform a tragedy on the stage which, given the almost 100⁰ heat, was appropriately enough a death scene.  It was seriously hot.

Ancient ruins, just down the road.

And now it’s time to cool way down. For the next couple of days, I’m going to enjoy sailing around the islands dotting the shore of our new home base of Fethiye harbor.  These clear blue waters mark the convergence of the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas and are a promised paradise for all types of water-filled fun.

Look for my next post in 3-4 days. It’s finally time to coast.

  1. Wow, this looks great. Could be on that boat all day for sure. Looks live a lovely place.

  2. Spectacular! Your photography is impressive. The amphitheater is simply stunning. Are they still doing any archaeological excavations around it?

Where are you guleting to? Will you swim in the Aegean? Can’t wait for the next post.

Your site looks great - I am really enjoying following your adventures!

    Go Erin Go!

  3. Thanks, Lisa! They aren’t excavating at the amphitheater in Kas, but there’s tons going on in Emphesus (Efes). Watch for the upcoming post on our trip — just yesterday — to this original 7 Wonders of the World.

p.s. Credit goes to David for the incredible photography. I merely wave at the camera.
